Aroma Mission

The Ministry of Science & Technology has prioritized the Northeast region and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) under the Aroma Mission, which aims to strengthen India’s fragrance industry by promoting the cultivation of aromatic crops and the production of essential oils. Known as the Lavender Revolution, this initiative focuses on high-value crops like lavender, lemongrass, vetiver, and palmarosa.

  • Progress:
    • Over 5,000 hectares of aromatic crops introduced in the Northeast.
    • 39 essential oil distillation units established.
  • Key Infrastructure:
    • IICON: Incubation & Innovation Complex at CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, providing advanced technologies to farmers.
  • Targeted Impact:
    • Annual production of 2,000 tonnes of essential oils worth over Rs. 300 crores.
    • Creation of 60 lakh man-days of rural employment.
  • Economic Benefits: Expected to increase farmers' income by Rs. 60,000 to 70,000 per hectare annually.
