Cloud Chamber Under Mission Mausam

India plans to establish a cloud chamber at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune as part of the Mission Mausam initiative.

Key Points of the Cloud Chamber:

  • Purpose: The cloud chamber will enable detailed studies of cloud formation and behavior, especially in relation to Indian monsoon conditions. This will help scientists better understand how clouds form and behave in the context of India’s unique weather patterns.
  • Structure and Function: The cloud chamber is a closed cylindrical drum where water vapour and aerosols are injected. Under controlled temperature and humidity conditions, it allows scientists to observe the seed particles that contribute to the formation of cloud droplets and ice particles.
  • Convection Properties: India’s cloud chamber will be equipped with convection properties, allowing researchers to simulate and study cloud physics under conditions typical of India’s weather systems.
India’s Cloud Seeding Experience:
India has previous experience in cloud seeding, particularly through the Cloud Aerosol Interaction and Precipitation Enhancement Experiment (CAIPEEX). CAIPEEX has demonstrated that rainfall could increase by up to 46% in certain locations, and about 18% over a 100 square kilometre area in rain shadow regions.

Mission Mausam Objectives:
Mission Mausam aims to:
  • Enhance weather forecasting capabilities.
  • Manage specific weather events, such as rainfall enhancement, hail, fog, and lightning strikes.
This initiative reflects India's commitment to improving weather prediction systems and managing climate-related challenges more effectively.
