iDEX Scheme

The Ministry of Defence is seeking additional funds for its iDEX scheme (Innovations for Defence Excellence) due to the fact that 90% of the approved budget for the period 2021-2026 has already been utilized.
Launched in 2021, iDEX aims to foster innovation and technology development within the defence and aerospace sectors, particularly through collaborations with startups, MSMEs, and innovators. As of now, 37 products have been developed under this scheme.

Key Components of the iDEX Scheme:

  1. iDEX Prime:
    • This initiative focuses on providing higher financial support for the development of more advanced defence systems.
    • The grant limit under iDEX Prime has been raised from Rs. 1.5 crore to Rs. 10 crore to facilitate the creation of sophisticated technologies.
  2. ADITI Scheme:
    • Launched in 2024, the ADITI Scheme offers grants of up to Rs. 25 crore for developing 30 key defence technologies under the iDEX framework.
    • ADITI 2.0 expands the scope by introducing 19 new challenges, focusing on areas such as AI, quantum technology, anti-drone systems, and adaptive camouflage. This aims to enhance India’s defence capabilities further.
  3. Defence India Start-up Challenges (DISC):
    • To encourage innovation in defence technologies, the DISC initiative was launched in partnership with Atal Innovation Mission.
    • The 12th edition of DISC offers 41 challenges in critical technological areas like Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and AI, providing grants up to Rs. 1.5 crore for eligible startups and MSMEs.

These initiatives under the iDEX scheme are designed to accelerate the development of indigenous defence technologies and ensure that India strengthens its self-reliance in defence capabilities.
