The Nabhmitra application recently played a crucial role in assisting fishermen during Cyclone Dana, utilizing the Vessel Communication and Support System.
This innovative system allows real-time tracking of vessel positions, course, and speed, ensuring fishermen can safely navigate back to shore during adverse weather conditions like cyclones.
Developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and implemented through NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO, Nabhmitra features indigenous transponder technology.
It enables two-way communication beyond the reach of mobile networks, a significant advancement over previous methods that relied on Very High Frequency (VHF) radio waves and phone calls, which were often ineffective for locating vessels in remote areas.
This technology ensures better safety and support for fishermen at sea, even in the absence of traditional communication infrastructure.
This initiative is part of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying's efforts to enhance the safety of fishermen, particularly during extreme weather events.
