The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), launched by the Ministry of Textiles, aims to make India a global leader in the technical textiles sector by 2024. Recently, 12 new research projects were approved, increasing the total to 168. These projects focus on key areas like geotextiles, sustainable textiles, and smart textiles. NTTM, running from FY 2020-21 to 2023-24, has four key components:
- Research & Development through institutions like CSIR and IITs.
- Market Development & Promotion, focusing on global collaborations and Make in India.
- Export Promotion, with a dedicated council for technical textiles.
- Education, Training & Skill Development, covering sectors like healthcare, engineering, and agriculture.
What are Technical Textiles?These textiles are designed for their
functional properties rather than aesthetics. Used in industries like
construction,
defense, and
healthcare, technical textiles include products such as
bulletproof jackets,
fireproof clothing,
agricultural fabrics, and
medical supplies.

These efforts strengthen India’s position in the growing global technical textiles market.
