About
The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India, launched as part of the Atma Nirbhar Bharat package. With a record ₹20,050 crore investment, it is the largest investment in the fisheries sector to date. PMMSY aims to develop the sector holistically, providing insurance, financial assistance, and access to Kisan Credit Cards for fishermen.

    • Reduction in post-harvest losses.

    • Two-wheelers equipped with ice boxes.

Achievements
  1. Growth in Fisheries Sector:
    • 14.3% growth from 2019-20 to 2021-22.
    • Fish production increased from 141.64 lakh tons (2019-20) to 161.87 lakh tons (2021-22).
  2. Export Milestones:
    • Record exports of 13.64 lakh tons, worth ₹57,587 crore.
    • Exports span 123 countries, including China, Japan, and the United States.
  3. Social Security:
    • Insurance coverage extended to 31.47 lakh farmers across 22 states and 7 UTs.

Implementation Mechanism
PMMSY operates under two components:
  1. Central Sector Scheme: Fully funded by the Central Government.
  2. Centrally Sponsored Scheme:
    • Costs are shared between the Centre and State/UTs.
    • Includes a variety of sub-components to address state-specific needs.

Forthcoming Plans
  1. Aquaculture Expansion:
    • Promotion of aquaculture in saline and alkaline areas of Northern India.
  2. Aquatic Health Management:
    • Tackling disease outbreaks, antibiotic use, and residue issues.
    • Strengthening the laboratory network for monitoring and diagnosis.

    • Utilizing reservoirs and natural resources through scientific practices and technology integration.
    • Public stocking and rejuvenation of water bodies through river and sea ranching.
