Rashtriya Gokul Mission

The Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), launched in 2014, focuses on the development and conservation of indigenous bovine breeds in India. It continues under the Rashtriya Pashudhan Vikas Yojna from 2021 to 2026 with a budget outlay of Rs. 2400 crore. The mission aims to preserve valuable indigenous breeds that are climate-resilient, produce high-quality milk, and are well-adapted to local environments.

Objectives:

  • Enhance bovine productivity
  • Promote high-quality breeding
  • Strengthen Artificial Insemination (AI) services
Key Components:
  1. High Genetic Merit: Improve livestock genetics through progeny testing, pedigree and genomic selection, and germplasm import. This includes the development of semen stations and IVF technology to ensure better pregnancies.
  2. Artificial Insemination Network: Expand AI access through MAITRIs (Multi-Purpose Artificial Insemination Technicians), promoting AI services in rural areas.
  3. Conservation of Indigenous Breeds: Support for Gaushalas and efforts to conserve indigenous cattle.
  4. Skill Development and Awareness: Capacity-building programs, farmer awareness campaigns, and support for bovine breeding research.
Key Initiatives:
  • Gokul Grams: Promote indigenous cattle breeds through special farms.
  • Awards: Gopal Ratna and Kamdhenu Awards recognize farmers excelling in indigenous cattle management.
  • National Kamdhenu Breeding Centre: A scientific center for breeding conservation and research.
  • E-Pashu Haat – Nakul Prajnan Bazaar: An online marketplace connecting breeders and farmers.
  • National Bovine Genomic Center: Enhances breeding through genomic technology.
Funding:
The mission is primarily funded through a 100% grant-in-aid with some components receiving partial subsidies, such as for IVF pregnancies and breed multiplication farms.
